A number of projects involved the joining of Metal to Ceramic, Ceramic to Glass, and Metal to Glass. While many of these projects were for production, several were for R&D.
The machine shown was developed to test the feasibility of fabricating "rod less" CRT electron guns. A natural gas flame was used for annealing while hydrogen/ oxygen spot heating torches were used to allow the forming of "dimples" to accurately hold the gun elements in position. The control system met Class 1 Division 2 standards.
