This is a side view of a numerically controlled riveting process.  This machine forms 4 tight rivets in a single assembly.  

A number of rivet application projects has also involved the forming of "loose" rivets which are typically found in products like "scissors".  

The most challenging rivets to form are "precision" rivets because they require a slight tension after the forming process is completed.  Because rivets constitute a very stiff "spring" the process to form precision rivets requires a fair amount of finesse.   A number of patents have been issued for forming precision rivets:   #7266876,  #7100272,  #6796020, #6442823,  #6161273, #5855054
